Get paid to combat climate change!
Climate change can feel like a massive, inevitable Sword of Damocles hanging over the planet. By ourselves, we can feel powerless to do anything about it.
Here’s the good news: there is a solution. It’s simple and fair.
And you’ll be paid to do it!
“You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.”
Richard Buckminster Fuller
Carbon Fee and Dividend
The main culprits of the current climate change and air pollution are emissions from burning fossil fuels – through our vehicles, heating and electricity generation, by us and by organisations and corporations.
Stop burning fossil fuels and we start healing the planet.
We believe the best way to do this is at UK-wide government level, through laws and policy, so citizens and business are working together.
Carbon Fee and Dividend works by placing a fee on fossil fuels as they are extracted in, or imported into, the UK. This rises each year. The money collected is then distributed equally to UK citizens.
Why do fossil fuels continue to provide most of our energy? The reason is simple. Fossil fuels are the cheapest energy. This is in part due to their marvellous energy density and the infrastructure that has grown up around them. But there is another reason: We do not take into account their true cost to society. Effects of air and water pollution on human health are borne by us, the public. Damages from climate change are also building inexorably and they will be borne especially by our children and grandchildren.
– James Hansen, leading climate scientist and former director of NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
Currently, we don’t have an effective pollution charge on the burning of fossil fuels. The devastation wreaked on the environment, on the climate, in our air and in our seas is not accounted for.
Carbon Fee and Dividend puts a pollution charge on fossil fuels, so when they are burned the cost to our planet is taken into consideration.
How does it promote equality?
But, unlike the UK’s fuel duty, it won’t hurt the pockets of most people within the UK. Citizens with a lower carbon footprint – those with low and middle incomes – will receive more back in dividend than rising prices will cost them.
The Carbon Fee and Dividend (CF&D) works within our economic system. It influences behaviour rather than telling people what to do.
It doesn’t fight the existing order, it makes it obsolete by replacing it with a new, better model.
Dirty energy will become more expensive than existing clean energy alternatives, and so people will switch to the cheaper option.
Most businesses and fossil fuel-reliant companies know burning fossil fuels is unsustainable and they – as much as anyone else – know something must happen to wean us off our polluting, climate-destroying addiction. After all, they are run by people who live on this planet too.
CF&D lets them know what the deal is, rather than piecemeal – sometimes last-minute – legislation. Dirty energy will become uneconomical and new clean energy technology will become an attractive investment.
